Happy New Year, Yes I know I am a bit late but it is the thought that counts. :-) Hope ou all had a good a time over the Christmas and New Year break as I did. Stamp News? well nothing too exciting. I am waiting for the new Roald Dahl issue from Royal mail, and the Year of the Dragon issue from Hong Kong Post. I will no doubt be lined up with every other Hong Kong resident next Saturday when the stamps are available for sale.

In the mean time I am busy producing the IPDA Anniversary cover - the cover is to commemorate the 10th Year of our Association. All members get one free. If you are not a member and you sell stamps on the internet then you should look at our web site IPDA and if you buy stamps online you should be asking is the seller a member of the IPDA, or some other accredited organisation.

IPDA 10 Year Anniversary

On the 23rd February 2012 the Internet Philatelic Dealers Association commemorates its 10th Anniversary. We will be issuing a special Anniversary Cover to members and holding a 24 hour chat for all in the philatelic community. Details can be found on our website at IPDA

The IPDA was formed in 2002 by a group of stamp dealers who had a vision that the internet, and web based services including online e-commerce and online auctions, would fundamentally change the philatelic industry.

The vision that the internet would impact dealers and sellers of stamps, as well as collectors, has turned out to be a reality today.

While there are thousands of sellers across the various internet channels today and while many are professional dealers, there are also many that are casual sellers and many that are simply individuals with a few stamps to sell and often with limited knowledge of the subject material they are selling.

The IPDA is now a group of dealers and part time sellers who believe there is a need for a global organisation to represent them and to endorse them as accredited sellers to the global internet buying community.

The IPDA believes, and has seen proof, that the reach of the internet will expand the market place.

Membership of the IPDA offers a dealer or part time seller the opportunity to be accredited, and it offers buyers some security that the dealers or sellers they are buying from are accredited.

Hello and thanks for visiting. I have been looking through a well known auction site for some stamps I am interested in, and I found this. Beautiful hahahah, actually the reason I am showing you is because when I came across the first listing I saw from this seller I was shocked at the rubbish quality of his material. Then I saw another and another and another. Then I looked at the number of feedbacks he has..... over 5000, Then I thought how can someone who is selling such rubbish get so much feedback, and with 100% positive. Astounds me. But then maybe he has sold lots of good material over the past 4 and 1/2 years. Whatever, I am of the opinion anyone that lists this type of material, and describes it as used, fine - very fine, is either stupid or trying to con you, and I don't care how good his feedback is. He should be recognised as trying to cheat you by selling this as described. Sad thing is he and many others can get away with it. Don't be misled into thinking high good feedback means good stamp, good honest seller. This seller is not honest because if he were he would be listing this as described.

If the seller is not a member of an accredited Philatelic organisation, or an accredited dealer please be careful.

There is one seller on this auction site who I visit for entertainment. He has openly admitted he knows nothing about stamps yet has the audacity to be selling "from his basement" material he has laying around in an old damp dusty box crawling with spiders. (Probably his sense of humour, but it sends very unprofessional message doesn't it.

I saw one of his lots sell last week. I feel for the buyer I really do. I could have given the material away in my free lots because the stamps were "damaged" with missing perfs, creases, grubby franking as can be the norm with GB QV, bad colouring, that is faded (such stamps are worth nothing), and generally a waste of postage let alone the money he threw away on his winning bid. Yes some naive buyer bid and got the lot. Wasted money yet worse still the seller is encouraged to keep putting junk material on the auction site and think they are doing people a favour and making some pocket money on the side.

Personally I think the auction sites should be made to vet sellers of certain materials. Difficult concept I do understand, and yes I know the buyer beware argument but as I have said before, sometimes in society for the good of the common individual we have to put protection mechanisms in place. Mechanisms to try to stop people from making fools of themselves, to try to stop certain types of people from taking advantage of others, and to try to stop people profiting from the failings of others. You know what I mean.

But all my readers are smart and would never be duped into buying rubbish now would you :-)

Hello, I have been thinking what to write about for a few days now. I thought about perforations, about printing techniques, stamps designers and about grading stamps.
I have long been a sometimes (ok, most times) critical voice about the quality of stamps being sold at auction by the non collector and amateur (yes very amateur) sellers.
I found this web site. I thought I would share it with you as it really does explain everything so very well.

As for quality. I found this listed on an auction site. Described as VFU.

Now read the link above and tell me if this is VFU. Oh! and tell me, should the seller be told he / she is misrepresenting the quality / grade of the stamp.

Interesting thought :-)

As far as I am concerned I will always look carefully at the item being sold and make my own judgment, I will not rely on the sellers description. And, I will often write and ask for a larger scan and a scan of the reverse of the stamp.

Of course, I also look to see if the seller is a member of an accredited organization / association, like for example the Internet Philatelic Dealers Association IPDA. It is a small Association with members across the UK, Canada, the US, Europe and here in Australia. It’s members largely run their businesses selling on the internet and are committed to selling accurately described stamps on the Internet.

As you know from reading my previous postings, anybody can list a stamp on an online auction and anybody can bid. Whether the person listing knows what they are doing – maybe inadvertently listing a stamp as something better than it is, or deliberately listing a stamp as something it is not, is one thing, but if the buyer does not have the knowledge to understand what he or she is buying then buyers will be taken advantage of. And from what I see there are many sellers on the internet only to pleased to take advantage of you.

A genuine seller will not want that to happen. A member of the IPDA will not want that to happen. Oh, and don’t for a minute think that just because someone says they have been a member of some countries philatelic organization for 35 years it makes them a good seller. Maybe they were a collector and now have decided to offload their stamps one at a time or whatever the case. Controversial? sure I am. I want you to start thinking and sharing this advice with your friends for your own advantage.

Recognise a dealer seller rather than a “oh I think I will sell my old man’s stamps on eBay” seller. Anyway. I hope you find the link above useful. Comments? :-) Best wishes. Enjoy your stamps. ....MIchael

Hello, I have been browsing the internet stamp blog sites these past few days. Am I bored or what! Seems so little of interest yet so many stamp blogs out there. I remember when I first stated blogging there were literally no stamp blogs. Now there are hundreds yet so few that challenge me to read them. And do they all get 1 or 2 or no readers?? I often wonder. Your thoughts. What do you read, apart from me of course :-) Norvic, one of the best in my view, Machin Mania another interesting and informative site, Adrians site at AKPhilately for pure quality writing and stamp design and issues from the past.

What is it that we want? I am asking myself this as it seems impossible to get a large readership. New issues? Competitions? Philatelic study and resources or just educational facts? How do we get stamp collectors to read any of those? Especially those who are buying overpriced rubbish on some auction sites........ Are we all time constrained? Do we just read the trash newspaper headlines about celebrities, sport and the weather? All of which is fabricated nonsense to get people to read it anyway :-) Or what.

:-) hello.. did that opening gain your attention.. I really am so bored you know. Looking at stamps and new issues and wondering what is going on in the minds of the Postal Authority administrations around the world.. all these new issues and who is collecting them and how can they possible be increasing interest in this wonderful hobby. Know what?? I think it is increasing interest in older issues.. I hope so. Stamps you can soak and enjoy soaking, stamps with design you can marvel at the artwork and creativity.

I am reading stampboards where people are talking about soaking stamps with insoluble gums. There is only one answer.. do not soak.. just cut on piece with the franking as intact as you can. I have been doing this for a few years now and have a much more interesting collection. Yes takes up more room in a stock album but is enjoyable to look through. And anyway you won't find many commemoratives used these days :-) As someone said.. who is using them.

But one nice stamp, and I have not written on the Year of the Tiger, seems too common a theme rrrrrggggghgg :-) this (above) from Canada Post, quite acceptable don't you think?.. I see Canada Post issuing lots of stamps these days but not as many as some countries

cost of new issues

Hello, thought I would see what peoples view were. I just read a piece on Linn's Stamp News.....maybe you saw it as well.. quote.. 'as of Feb 3rd the Postal Service ( US that is) has released eight new issues" .. to buy the stamps minimum amount to get one of each stamp, the minimum cost is US $85.38 ........... now that is rather a few bob!!! I think you will agree.

Let's look at Royal Mail..anyone know how much you would have to spend to collect new issues, Commemorative including Prestige Books and MS, no definitives were issued in those two months as I recall... to early February..??? Guess :-) anyone know what the cost of just the May 2010 Festival of Stamps issues will be??? Guess..

So, who is buying all these new issues? and Why ... and who is using them on letters... well lets face it they are generally not used anymore are they.. so why so many new issues... would it be more cost effective for the Postal Authorities to cut back on new issues and get a larger buyer demand from those they do issue.. I studied economics years ago and I think the law of diminishing returns now applies to these people that keep issuing stamps. Oh yes.. and elasticity of supply and demand....

as the Linn's writer says.. I will still collect stamps and remain active in the hobby, but I am no longer buying all US new issues. That was my view on GB quite some years back.

Hello, my first post of 2010. I cannot believe it. Where does the time go. Considering I am semi retired (aka looking for a job) you would think I had more time for stamps and writings.. but I don't. Oh well, such is life.

For those of you who follow the IPDA and anything I write on this blog you may know I have issued the February Newsletter. Anther 6 page edition courtesy of the excellent material members are providing. That is three 6 pages issues in succession.

If you sell stamps on the internet, and even if you are a member of one of the many very good stamp associations that are around, please have a look at our web site IPDA and think about joining. Fees are US $20 a year and you get to network - if you want to - with like minded sellers and more ( see the website). And you get a Newsletter every month which, although I say so myself, seems to have some following amongst the members. Member contributions are helping us share internet selling experiences.

Hello. 2009 is nearly gone. Good news eh!!! Many highlights in all walks of life but lets think of the IPDA .. The Association has achieved much during the year with membership numbers, eBay representation, communications to members on many topics of interest regarding dealer businesses, chatroom participation, and more I am sure..... but......... we need more active participation, we need more sellers committed to the values of the IPDA and we need buyers to be more aware of the quality of what they are buying, which, if from an IPDA member, is very much more than likely to be quality stamps, exactly as described.

Far too long a rant from me yet again :-) but I have to say it.

Join the IPDA, or promote the IPDA please.

stamp dealer alert - a scam you should be aware of

Stamp Dealer Alert
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service wants to alert all APS dealer members to a scam involving the purchase of discount postage using stolen credit card numbers.

An individual using the name Gus Ferraro has contacted two dealers with a story that he is working with the Toys For Tots program. He said that the program has to mail numerous toys and he had heard that stamp dealers sometimes sell discount postage. One dealer put together a discount postage lot and sold it to Ferraro who paid for it using two different credit cards in the names of two different individuals. When questioned as to why he was using these cards, Ferraro said that the two individuals were also working with the program and had consented to the use of their cards. The discount postage was then sent FedEx at Ferraro’s request to an address in North Miami Beach, Florida. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the credit card holders had not authorized any such transaction and had no connection with either Ferraro or Toys For Tots. Ferraro is using a cell phone with a 305 area code.

Should any member dealer be contacted by Ferraro, please advise U.S. Postal Inspection Service Consumer Fraud Analyst Nick Lombardi at 973-693-5381.

There seems to be such apathy out there these days.. I read some stamp boards and so few people are participating... Why?? what is happening?

Hello, we all know how important it is to have a good catalogue. I came across this today and thought I would share with you, especially if you are looking for a Christmas present for yourself :-)

Issued a few weeks ago now by SG and available at £39.95. This catalogue is the standard reference work for specialist collectors of the "Four Kings" period of British Philately, from 1902-1952. Background information is given for all issues, with full details of plate markings, sheet arrangements, inks, papers and shades, with helpful guidance on identification. Essays, proofs and colour trials are listed and priced. Many plate flaws are illustrated and priced as are shades not listed in the GB Concise catalogue. Detailed listings of control numbers and marginal plate markings are provided. Booklet panes, postage dues, officials and Channel Island occupation issues are all fully listed. Appendixes cover perforators, booklets, specimen overprintsw, protective underprints and inland postage rates. Prices are given for mounted, unmounted and fine used examples for the period from 1902 to 1935 and for unmounted and used thereafter. On cover prices are also given for Edward VII issues. Hello, I was talking to a friend this afternoon about IT system Health Checks and it got me thinking, I should check out some auction sites again and see what the stamp quality is like these days. I have a few sellers I watch occassionally..only because in the past they have put up some real garbage. But tonight I have been pretty impressed and seen very few poor quality or poorly described stamps. This is good news for collectors and I am very happy to see this.

I cannot be too "all good news" can I - GOM that I am hee hee :-) so a few words of advice.
1) Please don't only rely on the sellers description. Many sellers have absolutely no clue, and just because they have hundreds or thousands of sales to their name is not proof they know what they are selling.
2) Study the picture and if in doubt ask for a large scan.. of the front AND back of the stamp(s). Read first point again because if you dont get the scan don't bid. You are likley wasting your money.
3) Finally, yes it is ok I guess to buy single stamps which are being listed at 5c or 7c, or some such apparently very low amount, but remember you can probably get these for free from a decent trade..... the stamps I see listed for these sums I give away in the hundreds. In fact I think I gave away to some of these sellers the stamps they are now selling, individually selling each stamp that is. Oh the joy of free enterprise.

FYI, I sent 100+ stamps to a letter from a child the other day, from my Children's Corner Box.. the letter I got was a child's handwriting and I am hoping I wasn't being conned because I saw many of the same stamps listed for 5c and 10c. My stamps will not have arrived yet so this is just coincidence, but it goes to show there are sellers out there doing it for themselves and only themselves. hey that is ok too.. but that doesn't mean you have to help them does it. Look for alternative sources rather than paying over the top for the odd stamp, is my advice.
4) I add this. Is the seller a member of the IPDA - Internet Philatelic Dealers Association????? If not why not. You be the judge.

Oh and the stamps I showed you above..... Lovely selection .. NOT you tell me what is wrong with them..

collecting used stamps.. can it be done anymore

Hello, Today a friend here in Sydney gave me some stamps. He collects them from letters he receives and every now and again we meet up for lunch and exchange stories, and I get a few stamps. Of course the stamps are all modern, current issues and from a few countries, including the US and Great Britain, as well as, and mostly, Australia. I decided to sort and soak them as soon as I got home. Reason I am telling you this? Well I have not much more than 60% of what he gave me. Most stamps do not soak off these days. You knew that right? So is this the end of collecting modern issues? Of course it is. I've been saying this for a few years for a number of reasons actually. And, added to my reasons, is this use of non soluable gums. Really a way to stop stamp collecting as we have known it for the past 100 years. Why? because no one will be soaking stamps and enjoying the relaxation etc that gives, and then placing the stamps in albums. That is a dead past time, a dead hobby. Don't try to soak modern stamps. GB, Australia, US.. maybe others I do not see. You will have little to no success. Collecting from now on - actually from a few years back I started this with my own GB collection - will be with the stamp still on envelope, or at least a portion of the envelope.

So that is my ramble and rant. Your views? or have you given up collecting new issues used? Using GB as an example even as far back as 1960(the year, not the SG number) you will find used stamps are catalogued more than Mint. I've been saying for some years now, collect GB commemoratives postally used - if you can find them. :-)

so back to the stamp I showed. What a surprise to find this. How lovely a stamp is it? Brilliant in my view. But what is missing? Yes there is no postal franking. What is even more amazing is that a GB Commemorative was actually used on a letter..... :-) unexpected I am sure as Royal Mail seem to think these are issued for collectors of mint stamps only, many Post Offices do not even sell the commemoratives, so I have read.. or seen implied... Anyway, rather than get systems that work ( re franking) the Royal Mail now produce stamps with non soluble gum..... hopefully the commemoratives will still be sold in regular gums for a while, but I doubt it given the total (it would appear from anecdotal evidence) incompetency of the Royal mail franking processes. So even less chance of used commemoratives saved as stamps should be saved :-)

If we want stamp collecting to continue as a hobby for generations to come something will have to change; either the way we collect and mount / store our used stamps, or the Postal Authorities view towards collectors, and I wouldn't back the Postal Authorities if I were you.

Yes of course we have. And those new members do not have an anniversary cover do they. I thought they were a nice idea at the time, limited edition of course (100) ..... name me one other stamp organisation / association that has done such a cover.?? :-) fun collectable in my humble view.

FYI - The old password can still be used during a transition period of one month (30 days). After this expires (November 5th) the only means of entering will be the new password.

I thought I might show you the listing of the stamps to be issued by Royal Mail in 2010. You may have seen this elsewhere but in case you haven’t I hope this is informative. It will at least give you some idea of how much you need to save if you collect GB. Of course I cannot predict how many additional issues there will be, or how many extra minisheets, presentation packs or what else Royal Mail will dream up to get the collector dollars.

If you are a member, the sort of topics the Board is currently discussing and considering include how do we increase membership? and how do we get greater recognition of the IPDA, both for dealers and collectors.

What are your views? My thinking is we need collectors to be asking people selling stamps on the internet "are you a member of the IPDA"? (yes I acknowledge there are other excellent stamp associations and organisations, and membership of them is potentially a credibilty rating of itself) but we know there are people selling stamps on the internet who really are not members of such organisations and quite frankly are not doing the hobby collector, and often the more advanced collector, any favours. So what do we do, without spending a fortune I might add in publicity drives and materials? I may show some examples of what I mean over the coming week. You might be shocked... unless you already know what I mean

Here I am looking forward to showing you what I bought on eBay. I thought I was getting robbed and how glad I am that I was correct. Yes I am glad because I just had to buy to get the truth.. only a few bucks so well worth it if I can save others who know no better. Sadly I have no scanner or printer.. got home last night and the machine is dead. No idea why. Have to get a new one tomorrow.. I so want to share this "fraud" with you all. Wish there was something I could do to stop it.... but there is not and many people will not be reading my blogs or knowing any better and paying money to this guy.. oh it angers me....

such is life I guess.. but a lesson to pass on to other please. Please share in your clubs and wherever you can

I should be showing Easter eggs on stamps.

I have to show you this. I really do. It is for sale for US $2 on a website I found. Described as "Used Condition" although the seller does note the right corner is damaged. Oh, and it is not the only piece of junk I found on the site. Obviously the web site seller is not a member of the IPDA - Internet Philatelic Dealers Association Inc.

How bad that someone should even think of selling this. It should be put in the garbage. More importantly, I hope you all know rubbish when you see it. I am so angry that people can use the internet to sell stamps when they are obviously just trying to take advantage of people. Don't buy just because you want a stamp for your collection. And please make sure your friends don't get suckered into these type of buy situations.

Ruined my day to know there are people out there trying to sell stuff like this. Who are these unscrupulous morons.

an update on GB New issues..

“Royal Mail special stamps are always a commemoration of greatness in one form or another…”

These are the opening words from the Royal Mail “The Collection” publicity brochure I recently received. A really nice publication and one worth keeping. I applaud Royal Mail for the style and structure of the publication. It made interesting reading. And the quality of the paper and images is excellent.

This catalogue, as they also call it, shows all the 2008 issues. It has 48 pages so is not a slime tome by any means, as, after all, there were rather a lot of issues in 2008.

The 2009 issue should be even bigger based on the number of issues announced so far. I counted 32 but then I could be considered pedantic I suppose.
On 2009 issues I am pleased to see once again recognition of the need for collectors to not get bored with new issues. A few new issues every month is what we need to keep us interested. I am sure you will agree.
Sadly June and July will be drought months as there is only one issue planned for each month. What will I do with that extra cash I will be thinking. Will I turn to drink? I thought my addiction with GB stamps was bad enough. Maybe I will realise drink is cheaper, and I will sleep better anyway with drink.
But I hear Royal Mail have acknowledged the short supply in both months and are going to correct it with two additional issues. Recognising the sterling job that Royal Mail do in promoting and recognizing the history of Great Britain Royal Mail and things postal there will, I understand, be an issue in June to commemorate Free Standing Post Boxes and in July there will an additional issue of 12 stamps on the theme of Mythical Creatures. I even heard there will be a Pole Mounted Post Office box issue later in the year. This is exciting news, you have to agree, really you do :-)
I think this is wonderful and am really quite excited about these issues. I have long been a believer that not enough recognition goes to the Post Office Box, be it free standing or wall mounted – and by chance I happen to have a few photos from my own archives including one of my favourite wall mounted boxes; a GVI of course - and as for Mythical Creatures; Well, there can never be too many of these printed can there. Don’t we all enjoy regaling stories to the children / grandchildren of such creatures as we show off our stamp collections when they visit. I know I do. Surely I am not alone.

What a wonderful year we have ahead of us – of course if you don’t collect GB then my thoughts go out to you. How boring your life must be. And perhaps how sad your bank manager must be; you will have little debt. Enjoy your stamps…………………. Michael :-) :-) :-) April 1st 2009

Hello, yes have been travelling. sorry not written for ages. have so much to write about. So much to say. Will be short though as am rather disturbed! Recently flew the inaugural Qantas A380 Sydney Singapore. great flight excellent cabin crew, and had my FFC carried on the Singapore London leg. Will show genuine first flight covers soon (am in KL right now with no access to covers or scanner)

BUT,

I have been looking at a well known auction site recently.... seen a few "envelopes" that have Qantas and A380 and London Singapore flight related references. What do I do? I wrote to the seller asking if the covers had been flown, how did the frankings get to be there, you know, some credential type information. Guess what reply I got. You guessed it. yet I see these envelopes being sold. I know it is all buyer beware but is there some code of ethics out there? seems not. Is it wrong for for me to care. To think that fraud and misrepresentation should be stopped? Is it wrong that I want honest and genuine material to be sold.

I am confused. I am annoyed. I am angry that this is happening and I feel helpless to stop it.

Your advice? Get over it? Live and let live? .... How do I (we) get a message out there to the people that these are nothing other than envelopes created to be sold at a profit when they have no real linkage to the actual event they pertain to represent? would value your thoughts.

why join the IPDA???????????

well I guess the first question is, are you qualified to join the IPDA?

I say this will all respect to sellers who maybe wonderful people, but who I have little respect for, at least based on what I see them selling.

Take this for example. I don't think an IPDA member would be selling this as described - or not described - as the case maybe.

It is clearly damaged. The beauty of a scan is that the smallest detail actually can be seen on a large scan. So a really honest seller will use a big scan maybe and show beyond doubt the quality of the stamp. The less than lets say knowledgeable seller will show a big scan and not realise the quality that is being shown. Sadly the inexperienced buyer won't know squat all and just want the stamps for their collection and won't know to see if the seller is an IPDA member.

So moral: Lets promote IPDA; membership and what it stands for to the buyers, and join IPDA or tell sellers you know and recommend them to join the IPDA and hopefully stop some buyers getting a poor deal. ..

As for stamps... well I was looking at an auction site the other day and saw these stamps I liked.. but as I scrolled down the pages I saw the seller had also shown a copy of the reverse of the stamps. Well done to the seller. It helped clearly show the condition of the stamps.

Do you show front and back, Sometimes maybe not necessary I agree. But often a good idea if what you are selling has a flaw, or is really "fine"

Just a thought. Enjoy your stamps and if you sell stamps and are not a member of the IPDA.. why not?

It would be good to be able to say to your customers you are a member of the IPDA. wouldn't it? Yes I know there are many good Associations out there but we are interested in the Internet... Philatelic Dealers... Association. and quite frankly there are some real shonky sellers on the internet... sellers taking business away from you, a genuione stamp dealer ... maybe... so support us and help the buyers learn to recognise that there is a difference..

If you want my two hour lecture on some of the sellers on Stampwants and Stampoffers, hey write to me.. if you already agree with me.. and don't need to hear what you already know, then go to the website and sign up and help us help the collectors get a fair deal and .....improve your business.

It has been suggested that with eBay trying to prompt payment only by Paypal, or cash on delivery - a move that was knocked back in Australia by the ACCC - many people, both buyers and sellers, have decided to try other auction sites for stamps. I decided to check out eBay yesterday - I have not really had time or inclination to check them out in recent months, and certainly had no time to sell any material.

So I checked one of my favourite stamps - GB SG 494. I think it is undervalued in SG GB Concise and good well centred copies, UM or even VFU are in my view worth picking up.

So I did - I bid and won two lots, at prices that I have to say were the cheapest I have managed to get for at least two years.

Now you may be thinking more fool am I as the price really shouldn't be as high as SG are cataloging the stamp anyway. I guess that is something none of us really know. But I was happy none the less.

However, I did feel for the sellers. And to come back to my opening point, are people actually turning away from eBay. Well, are buyers turning away? Less buyers equals less competition.

I am currently watching a lot which contains the three higher value GB phosphor graphites, MNH. Current bid is just over ₤3. Yes that is right. No typo on my part, ₤3.

Hopefully you wont read this before the bid closes and outbid me :-)

I have not written for ages.. I am sorry about that. Been busy and lots of travelling to say the least.

This day in history intrigued me today.. Hope you like the stamp I show.
On this day in 1752, Benjamin Franklin flies a kite during a thunderstorm and collects a charge in a Leyden jar when the kite is struck by lightning, enabling him to demonstrate the electrical nature of lightning. Franklin became interested in electricity in the mid-1740s, a time when much was still unknown on the topic, and spent almost a decade conducting electrical experiments. He coined a number of terms used today, including battery, conductor and electrician. He also invented the lightning rod, used to protect buildings and ships.

New Issue for GB Royal Mail sparked my interest

Hello, I thought I would write about the Royalty and Heritage issue from Royal Mail

There is a lot to write about.So you thought the Great Britain stamps were special.. maybe.. but have a look at the Barbuda stamp, issued for the English Monarchs series in 1970 -71 I believe.

Interesting similarity for the image of Henry IV . A little bit of artistic touch up and colouring, shall we say, to the Royal Mail issue.Actually, not surprising as the image comes from a picture in Cassell's "History of England. Arrgghh .. is nothing original anymore. (see below).

Even Royal Mail have "copied" ha ha . Also, have you noted the dates on the stamp(s) 1399 - 1413. Did anyone think what these dates were.. Not the King's life as is often the nomenclature ( is that the right use of the word... you know what I mean) when quoting dates on stamps for a person. These are the dates of the reign of the King. Now be honest, did you know that

Hello everyone. Received this in the mail today..

a lovely envelope I guess... we knew this issue was coming.. and here it is.. should I open this and deface the envelope??? .. I think not..

Also, I might feint at the prices I would have to pay for all the upcoming new issues............

I show it because I thought you might like to see it...if you do not subscribe to Royal Mail new issues that is and therefore their proliferate mailings. I seem to get everything they issue even though I stopped buying anything but new Machins some years ago. Well these envelopes are collectables in their own right, all the same, I think.

Thought I'd talk about the IPDA for a few minutes

I have started listing again at Stampoffers.. .. looks good and easy to use.. well done James... but it occurred to me after listing that I had forgotten to put I was an IPDA member... and then I thought about the rubbish we have been seeing exposed on some of the threads here.. hopefully you will have seen them and laughed along with many of us, but as I said on one thread........ sad but true. And yes I know we all say Buyer beware, and Buyer be aware, but there is more to it than that....... there is honest and credibility and pride isn't there?
So, I thought, for those of you who buy - do you look to see if the seller is an IPDA member ...... a member of the Internet Philatelic Dealers Association ?? :?:
and if you are a seller do you promote that you are an IPDA member?? :?:
arrggghhh... :shock: because you are not a member of the IPDA ... yet..... well please have a look at http://www.ipdaonline.org find out about us....... we are a small group I will admit but we want to grow and promote good values, ethical as well as stamp values, when selling on the internet.
Yes, we are an Association for sellers on the internet...... so that buyers can be confident when buying from one of us.

sellers..... join and promote the IPDA and everything we stand for and want to promote,
and buyers...... ask if the seller is a member of the IPDA :)
Look, the cost to become a member is really only a nominal fee, US $20 a year for a one year membership.. that is all, no one off joining cost, and you get 10 to 12 copies of my brilliant newsletter :) :) and free ads on the IPDA website and probably more :D

Hello everyone. Christmas season is upon us.. all we miss is the snow here in Sydney.

Cinderellas

I wrote about Cinderellas on my own blog and a number of people have emailed me asking what they are. Do you have any further thoughts.. please email em at michaelatipda@gmail.com

Ok here it is in very simple terms

Cinderellas - stamps and related material of a non-postal nature - e.g. charity stamps, poster stamps, etc.

Another description I read says -- Stamp-like label that is not a postage stamp. Cinderellas include a wide variety of stamp-like labels, seals and bogus issues.

And if you look at the glossary in Linns you will read this

Cinderella: A stamp like label that is not a postage stamp. Cinderellas include seals and bogus issues, as well as revenue stamps, local post issues and other similar items.

So the key words are “stamp like label” and “non postal nature”. I think the use of the “bogus” only applies if the item is not correctly described as a Cinderella.

If you have a design idea for a stamp like label and create it on your computer and then print a block of them, say with no perforations making them imperf you have created a Cinderella. If you can do perfs as well – you can buy scissors to do this – you have created a perforated Cinderella.

Some weeks back I wrote about the Stamps from the Isle of Eigg. I mention these because these were local stamps. And there is a difference. “Locals”… these are non-official postal services such as college stamps, local delivery and parcel services, private authorised or non-authorised services, etc; Locals are Stamps valid within a limited area or within a limited postal system. Local post mail requires the addition of nationally or internationally valid stamps for further service. Locals have been produced both privately and officially. (again from Linns)

“Locals” are not something you just dreamed up and printed off your computer.

I hope this is useful. Enjoy your collecting, be it stamps, FDCs, local stamps or just Cinderellas

have you looked at eBay and searched on A380 stamps... you tell me... when is a cinderalla, even of it is decribed as a cinderalla (and some are not described that way even if they are blatantly cinderalls of course) a deliberate misrepresentation to exploit unassuming or less knowledgable collectors.

Or is this free enterprise at work? hhhmmmm ???

you know writing the thing is the easy part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and so you noticed the hyperlinks don't work in the .pdf format.. anyone know how to correct that..??????? I cannot send as Microsft publisher file as so many people don't have Publisher... why not is beyond me but that is another conversation... so how do I convert to .pdf and keep the hyperlinks?

look at this.. an auction lot ... and ask me why we need the IPDA ..... asking price US $1.49.. and the seller has 274 credits to his/ her name.. so how many collectors have been ripped off I wonder!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found in 5 seconds looking at an auction site... advertised as " Great Britain Scott # 167b Used Perf 14 - 1 pulled perf, perfin 1912 Issue - King George V 2007 Cat. Val. - $125.00.... starting bid USD $12 with a buy now for US $20

..please... lets question the credibility of these selleres by promoting to buyers they need to ask.. are you an IPDA member.

Your Board of Directors meet today. No not in sunny Hawaii or some such place but over the internet... a very useful meeting.. lots of ideas talked about........ like

what can we do to show more value to our members,
how can we do more to promote stamp collecting,
how can we promote quality when selling,
how can we get more buyers to recognise the value of the IPDA and its members
how can we get more dialogue between members
how can we get more members.....

What are your thoughts? We are serious about the importance of a group like us who promote standards and guidelines and values for selling over the internet. Afterall how many times do you see rubbish being sold.. don't you just want to write and tell people not to even consider buying.....

Read "StampBoards" and you will see much about the people that try to sell and the fools that buy... sad but true.. yet if a buyer .. a collector.. was to say to herself / himself.. is this person a member of a recognised association of some sort, and yes I agree there are many around the world, but we just want it to be that over the interent there is one that has some standing , as in the IPDA... wouldn't that help us all.. ?? I think so.

so.. get a fellow internet seller / dealer to join and agree to abide by our values and standars etc..

Or join yourself if you are reading and are not a member.. you might find your business,, in time... increase...

GB franking dots

Hello. well actually dots is not technically correct as the marks are shaped.. as you can see from the scans.. same four stamps.. for some reason the first scan did not pick up the true colour of the dots .. which are light grey I might add.. and when I rescanned with different settings I got what is more a negative image and from which you can see the shape of the dots better.

anyway.. the dots or whatever you want to call them are from the franking machine as far as I know. I read an article on these some time back and for the life of me cannot find it, but I am guessing someone out there knows a lot about these postal markings. I am sure my mate Roy at MachinMania wrote about them.. or we spoke about them. The reason being, there is debate as to whether they are "proper" frankings to us purests that like to see a town and date cancel etc etc.. rather than some computer read and processed image.. lets leave it at that!!

As far as I am concerned.. they spoil and "damage" the stamp. There, that should provoke some debate... 25th October 2007 - First Flight

A date I am so looking forward to and one I am sure I will always remember.

I will be on this aircraft flying from Singapore to Sydney.. on the first ever commercial flight of the A380.

These stamps will be on covers I have designed and which I will carry on the flight, and which I hope to get franked in Singapore airport, and then franked again on arrival in Sydney.... and if I am really smooth talking maybe signed by some of the crew...

I will make a limited edition and yes, I will sell a few to cover the costs but also to let collectors have something rather special, well I hope so. If you are interested please email me at cddstamps@gmail.com ..

I am only looking at producing 25 copies.. maybe less.. so these will be quite unique as I see it.

I've been interested in the A380 for quite some time.. years in fact, and I produced a flight cover for it's first flight into Sydney.. as some of you may recall.. I even wrote a blog on the stamps of the A380.. but somehow it fell by the wayside.. I lost the link and the material I created.. and didn't continue.. I should have really.. anyway....I am copying some material from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A380 ( you can read lots more details there) so you can read something about the aircraft itself. Apology if this doesn't interest you.. but I think it is quite interesting so am sharing my interest with you.

Five A380s were built for testing and demonstration purposes.The first prototype, serial number 001 and registration F-WWOW, was unveiled at a ceremony in Toulouse on 18th January 2005. Its maiden flight took place on 27th April 2005. The prototype, equipped with Trent 900 engines, departed runway 32L of Toulouse Blagnac International Airport with a flight crew of six headed by chief test pilot Jacques Rosay, carrying 20 tonnes of flight test instrumentations and water ballast. The take-off weight of the aircraft was 421 tonnes (464 short tons); although this was only 75 percent of its maximum take-off weight, it was the heaviest take-off weight of any passenger airliner ever flown.

In mid-November 2005, the A380 embarked on a tour of Southeast Asia and Australia for promotional and for long-haul flight testing purposes, visiting Singapore, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur. During this tour, the livery of Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Malaysia Airlines were applied in addition to the Airbus house livery. On 19th November, an A380 flew in full Emirates livery at the Dubai Air Show.

On 1st December 2005, the A380 achieved its maximum design speed of Mach 0.96, in a shallow dive, completing the opening of the flight envelope. The aircraft's maximum allowed operational speed is lower, at Mach 0.89, and its cruising speed is Mach 0.85.

On 10th January 2006, the A380 made its first transatlantic flight to Medellín in Colombia, to test engine performance at a high altitude airport. It arrived in North America on 6 February, when an A380 landed in Iqaluit, Nunavut in Canada for cold-weather testing. The same aircraft then flew to Singapore to participate in the Asian Aerospace 2006 exhibition, in full Singapore Airlines livery.

On 26th March 2006, the A380 underwent evacuation certification in Hamburg in Germany. With 8 of the 16 exits blocked, 853 passengers and 20 crew left the aircraft in 78 seconds, less than the 90 seconds required by certification standards. Three days later, the A380 received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to carry up to 853 passengers.

The first A380 planned for delivery to a customer, serial number 003 and registration F-WWSA, took to the air in May 2006. The maiden flight of the first A380 with GP7200 engines (F-WWEA) took place on 25 August 2006.

On 4 September 2006, the first full passenger-carrying flight test took place. The aircraft flew from Toulouse with 474 Airbus employees on board, in the first of a series of flights to test passenger facilities and comfort. In November 2006, a further series of route proving flights took place to demonstrate the aircraft's performance for 150 flight hours under typical airline operating conditions.

As of September 2007, ten A380s had flown, and the five A380s in the test programme had logged over 2,900 hours during 1,995 test flights. During testing and route proving, the A380 visited 24 countries: Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Hong Kong , Iceland, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, the United Kingdom and United States of America. Airbus obtained the A380 type certificate from the EASA and FAA on 12 December 2006 in a joint ceremony at the company's French headquarters. The airframe still needs to receive production certification.

Amazing me thinks.. and this only scratches the surface of the awesome facts and figures and information athat exists about this aircraft.

horse theme.. and with that a priority for me at the moment...... yes my horses are ok.. thankfully... and I hope they stay that way.. with some 100 plus properties infected in NSW one just doesn't know what will happen next...

first flight covers on the A380

Ok, so I have not written for ages.. just no time and anyway been overseas a lot...

but here is a challenge for you.. any well off people ( IPDA members) out there who want to sponsor me to fly on the Singapore Airlines first A380 commercial flight from Singapore to Sydney... I really want to fly on that first A380 flight.. and carry some covers.. I am planning to make them myself.. very limited edition .. very limited I am sure.... I am think of about 25 only.. and if I fly I am going to do my best to get some crew signatures....

I realise I need sponsor donations to cover what is turning out to be a pricey auction on eBay for the first flight tickets.. I am registered and have paid my security deposit but the current auction price is outside my budget... so please send money.. if I don't win the auction ..it will be returned.. Hello. To those of you who check occassionally I have to apologise for not writing recently, what with overseas traval and sadly an extremly period at work I just am not making the time.

no not Susan, although that would also be nice... but stamps.. my first viewing of a stamp in I don't know how many days... yeah gods I am getting withdrawal symptons, and just got off a 90 minute conference call with various people in various countries.. shucks, work gets in the way of stamps, doesn't it

so to a stamp... how about this cover.. really nice condition actually... when was it issued I wonder? what is it worth?.. should I try to auction it?.. or just give it away.. your thoughts... someone out there must know something about it..

Hello, I am finishing off the June Newsletter.. and you will really enjoy this one.. I am fuming and going to expose a cheat.

Should I, is the question I ask myself.

I wrote to an eBay seller asking him to explain himself because what he listed was damaged and he listed it as fine used.

He has written back to me telling me he is going to report me to eBay - bacause I told him who I was in terms of my web site and as a Director of the IPDA - so as to establish my credibility.

Now I like a challenge, and the fact that this seller is an established Melbourne dealer ( I have to believe because he has over 4000 eBay feedbacks) is of no consequence to me .... so read the June issue..

Someone bought his listing .. with torn corner..whether they know they have a space filler or not is besides the point.. this seller has deliberately mislead the buying public and that in my book is not acceptable. It potentially gives all sellers of stamps a very bad name.

eBay fraud ids deregistered....and "IPDA comes of age"

Hello, My last piece for a while as I have to go overseas on Monday.. although, if I get some free time in airport lounges or hotels I might send a postcard or two.

Two pieces of news.. One, courtesy of Glen Stephens http://www.glenstephens.com/ and the StampBoards http://www.stampboards.com/ stamp bulletin board group.

This is pretty important and relevant to us all … and another reason why membership of the IPDA should be promoted to sellers.. Think about the following - members of the Stampboards.com community have showed and I quote from Glen and the Board postings

APTA members internationally have been briefed on the fellow and his fakes, and none of them will likely be conned into buying them, as they are now fully aware of what is out there. Oxygen is starved. No outlets = no reason to keep offering the dud stamps, as he will get lumbered yet again. A job well done by all concerned I'd say. The TEN ebay fake handles involved - all now de-registered are:

In my view, these were all the one person at work. He has a criminal record, and has served long jail sentences for other offences. This person is a fully trained and qualified medico, and one wonders what drives someone that smart into this kind of petty fraud. He knows enough about stamps to make more money selling legit things, but this all seems to be a giant game to him - "fleece the bunnies". Most fakes offered were Australian official perfins, and a small range of fake cancels and overprints were also involved including a few NZ issues.

Some were fairly convincing, and many were appalling. Where some ebay buyers get their brains from one really wonders. When you see total obvious fake rubbish attracting a raft of high bids to $190 for comically bad things like this below, [img]http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s113/ozstamps/Rabual10shebayonpiece.jpg[/img] clearly cancelled a few days before it was listed, with a cheap rubber stamp pad, and a laughable rubber cancel:

I err when I say 10 handles have been banned so far. Only 9 have. bexapunk101 ebay seem to have missed for some reason. And that one needs to get the same account closure. …”

My second piece is about the IPDA and courtesy of Roy Simpson a fellow Director who wrote this for us. And if you don’t already visit Roy’s blog I encourage you to.. good reading me thinks…

The IPDA Comes of Age
April 2007 will be a date to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Internet Philatelic Dealers Association ( now IPDA inc)

In order to do this Michael Dodd who is the publicity director ( CDD Stamps, Sydney, Australia) has designed a special cover with a limited edition of 100.

These will be given free to all current members as a memento of the occasion. I only have a image of the cover in pdf format at the moment, but will add a picture here as soon as it is available to me.

I have written about the IPDA inc previously and as a member myself and fellow director I do believe it is a worthwhile organization to belong to, no matter if you are a big bucks dealer or just an ordinary fellow who deals and sells the odd philatelic item on eBay or Yahoo.

What do I get for my money I am often asked? Well for starters the fees are not expensive, at $20US per year, this works out at less than 38 cents per week. For this amount I can state with a clear conscience that as a member you will in the long run you get more than you pay for.

The IPDA inc will advertise your name and business on its well known website, you will receive a news letter 12 times a year. You may also add a banner onsite for a small amount, all revenue from advertising goes towards developing and promoting the association.

The association will also introduce you to contacts within the trade. But most important of all, worth more than all the tea in China and something you can not buy, this is, you get the respect and confidence of Internet buyers / sellers who will trade with you. I will even go so far as to say you will also get more business when people know that you are a member.

The Non profit making association was Incorporated this year and has a duly elected committee who insists on behalf of the membership that any new application for membership sign a disclaimer that they will abide by the associations rules and adhere to a strict code of conduct .

They (applicants) are also checked out fully before they are given a membership number. What are you waiting for? If you sell on the Internet (part or full time) or you have an Internet auction identity on eBay or Yahoo, or any other online auction for that matter you are welcome to apply for IPDA membership.

All new applicants over the next 6 months will also get the Special 5th anniversary cover sent to them free of charge as a token of gratitude. Apply today: I have included a direct link to their website above , or just click on application form and fill in your details its as simple as that. Once accepted download the logo for 2007 and join the list of respected International Online Philatelic Dealers, which grows steadily year by year.
